Back from Hiatus and New Sunday 5
Hi all,
Thanks for being here! And sorry for the hiatus :(
✨ Sunday Five
And also welcome to Sunday 5 - a new iteration of this newsletter where I share 5 insights, news and learnings from my POV (as a developer, foodie, weightlifting junkie, avid reader, etc etc).
🐢What has been happening with me
I recently returned from a long overdue trip to Europe to see family, new family and attend a wedding.
All flights were absolute bonkers! And all airports were absolute bonkers too!
I got to go to Manchester and London in the UK and Rome in Italy. In all instances I had the same experience of super busy airports and chocker block flights.
If you're thinking of travelling in the next 6 months - well then good luck! Prices for tickets are crazy right now so book as early as you can.
💻 Back to work
Returning from this holiday also meant returning to work from my first holiday since becoming a developer (nearly 3 years ago).
There are a few mental models I use to manage my energy when it comes to being a developer.
Some of them being dividing the concept of my body's energy as overall and mental energy. This helps me understand where exactly I'm tired and how to manage it.
Watch out for a premium email where I cover more of this.
But the TL;DR are if you're overall tired, take a few days off. You'll feel better.
If you are mental tired, going to the gym and lifting hard generally helps me. But once in a while, let's say once in 3 years, you need to step away from the computer, go on a holiday and not open VSCode once.
I'm happy to be back and I'm happy that I'm coding again.
📉What's been going on in the Brisbane tech scene
During this past week, the market discovered that Swyftx had made about 21% of their workforce redundant including people like their Head of Engineering.
This is quite sobering news since Swyftx was one of the fastest growing tech companies in Brisbane, hiring at breakneck speed.
We will see what the future holds - just remember that some companies do really well during uncertain times like this.
📸 Some photos from the trip
I got to eat some absolutely incredible pasta in Rome, Italy with my family who lives there

And I also got to take a selfie with Alan Turing - the legend who basically created computers. Thanks for creating my job my dude!

😗 That is all friends
See you next week right around this time! If you have any comments or suggestions just reply!
Cheers,
Santiago
